April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for communities to come together to build caring connections, supportive environments, and positive experiences for all children. Though this is important year-round, April gives us the opportunity to shine a light on child abuse and inspire conversations about how to prevent it. Shanklin students are learning and practicing conflict resolution skills using a peace path as part of the No Place for Hate initiative. Self-awareness, listening skills, empathy, team work, and critical thinking are all utilized. Students take turns sharing how they feel, what they want or need, and then brainstorm together to find a solution. Resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner is a lifelong tool and fosters a respectful and inclusive learning environment at Shanklin Elementary. #NoPlaceForHate

The counselor guidance lessons this week focus on managing emotions by learning and practicing calming down coping skills like controlling the breath. Each grade is focusing on a different topic such as managing anxiety, calming down anger, handling accusations, and handling making mistakes. All of these skills are important in social and emotional development and are beneficial now and moving forward into the future.

Central office leaders participated in the No Place For Hate discussions this week about families. The kids did a fantastic job of drawing their families and focusing on similarities while respecting differences. Focusing on the common themes in families even though they may look different and have different traditions fosters an environment where all students feel accepted and included. #noplaceforhate
